Russia has arrested a Japanese journalist on suspicion of espionage, accusing him of collecting information about Russian military personnel who have participated in the Ukraine conflict. Yuki Imai, 34, a correspondent for Japan’s Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper based in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, has been remanded in custody until December 12, Kommersant reports. According to the FSB, Imai was acting on instructions from Japanese intelligence and had questioned local residents about mobilised soldiers and volunteers. The journalist, who previously studied at St Petersburg State University, has covered the disputed Kuril Islands and Russia–North Korea relations.

🚨BREAKING 🇷🇺🇯🇵 Russia calls on Tokyo to come to its senses and change its approach, abandoning hostile actions towards it, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in the wake of the detention of a Japanese journalist. Tokyo’s attempts to use its correspondents to gather information with the aim of undermining Russia’s security are regrettable. This incident will become an additional factor overshadowing the atmosphere of Russian‑Japanese relations, the diplomat noted.
