核災致畸形 孤女蛻變為殘奧健將

【香港輕新聞】今天是切爾諾貝爾核災三十周年紀念日。聯合國估計,當年洩露的逾八噸放射性物質,造成約四千人死於核輻射相關疾病,亦令逾320萬人健康受影響,在核災發生三年後出生的馬斯特斯(Oksana Masters)就是受害者之一。

現年26歲的馬斯特斯原名邦達爾丘克(Oksana Alexandrovna Bondarchuk),出生於烏克蘭西部的赫梅利尼茨基(Khmelnytskiy)。她天生沒有拇指,其餘手指起蹼,有6隻腳趾,兩腿畸形,只有一個腎,腸胃殘缺。她幼時因而被父母遺棄,童年在3間孤兒院輾轉度過。

機緣巧合下,美國紐約州的語言病理學家蓋伊太太看到馬斯特斯的照片,深受觸動,經過2年冗長程序,終於把她接到美國收養。自此馬斯特斯的人生才迎來轉機,她說,「我媽媽切切實實地拯救了我的生命。我本來不可能離開孤兒院。」

由於嚴重營養不良,8歲的馬斯特斯被收養時只有35磅。起初,她傷殘原因不明。直至牙醫發現她牙齒沒有琺瑯質,或因輻射導致,方懷疑馬斯特斯的母親懷孕時,受切爾諾貝爾核災輻射感染。

而馬斯特斯9歲那年,由於殘缺的雙腿無法承受體重,被迫截肢。但後來她因此發現對划艇的興趣,划艇亦成為她療愈內心傷痕的方法。馬斯特斯形容劃艇就像逆水行舟,「治癒我的過去」,讓她感到釋放。

在蓋伊太太的鼓勵下,馬斯特斯努力練習,最終成為傷殘運動員,在2012年倫敦殘奧的雙人划艇中獲得銅牌。在2014年索契冬殘奧,她在滑雪項目中奪一銀一銅。
